Thank you to the community partners, corporations, and private foundations listed below, for partnering with us to ensure our students have the support they need to access, attend, and graduate college!

The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS) fuels Washington’s future economy by providing scholarships and a continuum of support services to low- and middle-income undergraduates pursuing high-demand degrees in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and health care in Washington state.

They help Washington students pursue the education and training they need to launch careers in high-demand sectors of Washington State’s economy. Opportunity Scholars receive up to $22,500 in scholarship dollars and access to career-launching support services like mentorship, industry connections and professional development.

CAN has collaborated with WSOS since 2016. We work together to more effectively advance our missions to support students on their path to college graduation! In the 2016-2017 school year xxxx CAN students received a WSOS scholarship. Read on to find out more about WSOS and why they choose to partner with CAN!

What are the challenges and opportunities facing students going to college these days?

The barriers to a college degree remain high for many students in our state and across the country. The high-cost of college tuition prevents many students from attending school and forces others into years of student debt. Navigating the college application process for the first time and trying to determine a field of study can also be really tough for students

The good news is that scholarships and organizations like CAN, WSOS, your high school and future college or university have staff available to help! Students who are willing to ask for help will often find there is a lot of support out there.

School advisors or guidance counselors can help answer questions about the financial aid process and help students weigh decisions like choosing a university based on your interests and budget. Organizations like CAN help students find scholarships and navigate the financial aid process.

Once selected as an Opportunity Scholar, WSOS provides access to a staff of people ready to help students navigate their college career from day one to their degree by helping students get the resources they need to succeed in their STEM or health care major and make industry connections.

Universities and colleges have their own academic advisors and on-campus programs that also provide support services as students begin their college education.

A college education opens doors. Washington State has more jobs in STEM and health care fields then students who are qualified to apply for those jobs.

Washington is home to ground-breaking businesses like Boeing, Microsoft and many more technology, science and engineering companies that are changing the world through innovation. We at WSOS believe that the kids who grow up in Washington should be the same kids who get to compete for and start careers in these exciting fields in our state. We work every day to launch kids from every corner of Washington state into these exciting jobs.

What role do you feel CAN plays in the meeting the needs of this community?

CAN plays a critical role in helping open the doors of possibility and encouraging students to see a college education as a goal. CAN helps students tackle the challenges and uncertainty in the college application process step-by-step – and gives students the tools they need to prepare and reach success until they earn that college degree.

Why did WSOS choose to partner and support CAN's work?

WSOS is grateful to have CAN as an incredible partner in helping to promote and support our scholarship. CAN works in the communities we serve, building trust and fostering relationships with students every day. We rely on CAN to help identify students who are interested in STEM and health care fields and connect them to our scholarship. Together we can help students access the resources they need to achieve the dream of a college education and launch a great career right here in Washington.
