“The least bright rich kids are as likely to go to
college,
and more likely to go to a good college, than the brightest
poor kids” Harvard University President Lawrence Summers, Nov. 1, 2004 Why Do We Need CAN?The above quote sums it up. There is substantial research supporting the importance of a college education, and the impact an advanced degree can have on future earnings. Access to post-secondary education continues to be largely limited to middle- and upper-income families. It is more likely that low-income students are first-generation college students and thus less likely to receive assistance from parents or siblings. They are also more likely to attend schools where there is a shortage of guidance counselors available to assist with the college and financial aid application processes (student to counselor ratio is 400:1).
