Program Operation
College Access Now students meet after school
from 2:30 to 4:30 for scheduled CAN Sessions after school in
the computer lab at Garfield and Franklin High School. CAN is also open for extra lab days for students to get intensive
assistance. Students receive assistance with all aspects of
their college applications, such as filling out counselor request forms
for recommendations, campus selection, and essay writing. Students are
required to apply to between three and five campuses. Students and
coaches meet in the computer lab so that they will have access to
on-line college searches and the ability to track their progress.
As soon as the college applications are
submitted, the focus will turn to the financial aid application process.
Coaches will assist the students in completing and submitting the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in a timely manner. In
addition, students will be required to apply for at least three
different types of independent scholarship aid.
In the spring, students will continue to pursue
financial aid opportunities, participate in campus visits and receive
guidance for the transition to college.
Finally, CAN students are required to give at
least eight hours of community service. These hours may be applied
toward meeting their high school graduation requirement.
